Ingalls family reminiscences and correspondence.

Ingalls family reminiscences and correspondence.

3 typescripts, at least some of which are from members of the Ingalls family. First is a group of material from E.S. Ingalls: 2 copies of a 3-page journal titled "Journal of incidents enroute from Waukegan, Ill. to Pikes Peak gold diggings, 1859" with a note "Part of an unfinished journal written by my dear husband" signed M.M. Ingalls. Attached are 2 copies each of 2 typescript letters: "Placerville, March 2, 1851 My dear Martha" from E.S. Ingalls; "Antioch Dec. 22, 1861 Dear son" from E.F. Ingalls and a handwritten cover note "My dears" from Cousin Rene (Rue) no date. Second is a typescript: "A personal reminiscence of the big fire of 1871" by Josephine Sawyer (daughter of E.S. Ingalls), about the Peshtigo, WI fire of October 7-8, 1871. The third is titled "Memoirs of a '49er" and is 68 pages of dense typescript with red editorial notations. This was formerly attributed to E.A. Ingalls, whose manuscript diary is at the Bancroft Library (see their record), but this cannot be the case since the name of the ship, the ship's captain, and the dates of the voyage in this typescript do not match those in the E.A. Ingalls manuscript. Also, the writer is referred to as "Charles" and "Charlie," and his last name might be "Bowers," since he identifies his brother by that name. How "Charles Bowers" was related to the Ingalls family is not clear, but he and this family were both from Massachusetts, and he later acquired timberland in Wisconsin near where members of the Ingalls family settled (the vicinity of the Peshtigo fire).

8 typescript reminiscences and letters ; 8 1/2 x 11 x 1/2 in.
